Home Remedy

Every dog has some yeast growing on their skin and in their ears. Most of the time, the body is in balance and the yeast causes no problems. But if this balance gets upset, your dog may get a yeast infection in his ears.

There are some simple things you can do to prevent ear yeast infections.

Keep Your Dog Healthy

A healthy dog is better able to fight off and recover from ear infections.Zymox Otic (1.25oz) with Hydrocortisone (1.0%)

So keep his immune system in good shape by feeding your dog a healthy diet and limiting the table scraps. A good vitamin and mineral supplement given every day will make sure he gets all the nutrients he needs. And give him lots of exercise with daily walks, playing catch, or organized day care.

Every part of the dog’s body, including his ears, will benefit and he will sleep better and be more obedient when he is tired.

Keep his ears dry as much as possible. Yeast loves a moist environment and thrives in the dark ear canal if it is wet. Dogs with ears that stand up have more air flow which keeps them drier, but floppy ears require more care from you. After swimming, dry the external part of his ears with a towel or cotton balls, and rinse his ears with a drying ear cleanser for dogs.

Home Remedy

A homemade mixture of 1/3 apple cider vinegar and 2/3 water in a spray bottle can help to keep your dog’s ears more acidic. Gently spray on the outer ear and wipe with a cotton ball. A little may drip to his middle ear, which is good, but don’t try to spray down there.

Plain yogurt with active cultures is another easy way to help prevent dog ear yeast infections. A spoonful of yogurt added to his food once a day is helpful and enjoyed by most dogs, as long as they are not sensitive or allergic to dairy products.

Avoid overusing antibiotics. Sometimes they are necessary, but ask your vet if there are other treatments available before resorting to antibiotics. They kill off the good bacterial as well as the bad and throw off the body’s balance, in humans as well as in dogs.

Suggested Products

If your dog must be on antibiotics, consider giving him probiotic capsules with his meals; just a couple of capsules opened and sprinkled over his food will help keep his good bacteria count steady. Some vitamin and mineral supplements for dogs include probiotics and are easy to give every day.

I’ve found that Only Natural Pet is a good online resource to buy probiotics and vitamins for my dog Dakota. They have reasonable prices, and usually have montly specials and free shipping on their own branded products.

Consider using Zymox Otic , a non-prescription treatment containing enzymatic anti-microbials. One daily dose of Zymox cleans, medicates, and may prevent your dog’s yeast overgrowth. It is available as drops, cream, spray and ear cleaner.
